It is Little Chirp’s birthday tomorrow, so this week is the week of Little Chirp.

Last night, he chose fillets for dinner.  I stir fried mushrooms, zucchini and onions for a side dish, and I got to use my recently purchased rice cooker for the first time.

I am a pretty good cook, but making rice goes on the same list as love, relationships and bike riding…the Things That I am Terrible at List. I bought a rice cooker from CostCo the other day in hopes of improving my rice cooking skills.

The boys played Mario Chase in the living room while I cooked up their feast.  There was some major excitement with the Mario Chase game.  Mario Chase is a very simple game.  One player gets to be Mario and the other players chase Mario around and try to tackle him before time runs out.  Little Chirp loves to be Mario and out run his big brother.

Dinner was a hit.  The rice turned out perfectly.  Brainy Bird asked, “Did you make the rice different?  I don’t usually like it when you make rice.”  I laughed.  I thought to myself that it would be nice if I could mark some other items off the Things That I am Terrible at List so easily.

Tonight was another great day in the week of Little Chirp.  I made pot roast, with baby carrots and baby potatoes.  Potatoes are a rarity at my house.  Little Chirp loved the little miniature potatoes.  The pot roast was outright pathetic in comparison to the pot roast that my Omie (Mom’s Mom) used to make me when I was Little Chirp’s age.  My boys thought that it was spectacular.  This is the first time that I ever felt that my kids were deprived at the dinner table.

The highlight of tonight was our Sorry! Sliders tournament.  At the start of the game, we agreed that if I won it would be the day of Mommy next Saturday, and the boys would have to try whatever foods I wanted, watch whatever movies I wanted, and play whatever board games I wanted.  If Brainy Bird won, he would get a Fast Pass for our trip to Fiesta Texas on Friday.  If Little Chirp won, we would go to Orange Leaf while we are in New Braunfels.

The tournament was close in a three way tie with every game having a down to the wire finish.  Brainy Bird had the last move.  I was in winning position and so was Little Chirp.  Brainy Bird had to make an automatic home to win, there was no way that he could knock us both out of winning position.  Brainy Bird can almost always pull off an automatic home when the game is on the line.  He got that look in his eye, and grinned at me, and he then shoved his piece down the board with force clearly not intended to land in automatic home.  His piece smacked into mine, knocking me out of winning position, thus leaving Little Chirp to claim victory.

Little Chirp was sooooo excited about his big win.  Afterwards, Brainy Bird explained to me, “Hey, I like going to Orange Leaf.  I can earn a fast pass to Fiesta Texas some other time, and I can’t be sure what movies I would be watching if it were the day of Mommy.  Besides, it is the Week of Little Chirp.”

I always like the sound of Brainy Bird’s “explain it to me” voice.  We had such a great night.  I look forward to waking Little Chirp up tomorrow on his birthday.

The Week of Little Chirp is off to a beautiful start.
