Rethinking the New Normal – Day 54.5 of 15

It is only a quarter until nine o’clock in the evening and Potatoe and I are snuggled up in bed. Well sort of, we are both snuggled in the covers, but he is laying on his side of the bed with his puppy blanket as his pillow. He got in trouble earlier tonight for eating out of Storme’s food dish. Potatoe rarely gets in trouble. He sort of mopes and keeps to hisself for a few hours when he does. He has never once been spanked in our home. Just a firm, “bad Potatoe” is enough to send him into a spell of remorse and put him back on track with his good behavoir.

If only it was this easy with humans.

I spent my Saturday planning the upcoming week. I set my objectives and priority tasks for the week, made a schedule of activities, cleaned the house, planned the meals for the week, and made the grocery list. If you consider logging onto HEB’s website and selecting groceries for curbside pick up tomorrow grocery shopping, than I also did the grocery shopping.

I then opened a bottle of wine and made myself a hamburger and tater tots. While it was a grass fed burger on gluten-free bread and the tater tots were baked, not fried, there is definitely an opportunity to eat healthier, which is the plan for next week. Every meal next week is comprised of meats and vegetables with no refined carbs. It is insane how deliciously one can eat on meat and vegetables alone. We will be enjoying two meals out next week. That may sound like a lot, but not if you conider that we eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together (15 meals) in a week, 2 out of 15 isn’t bad.

After my early dinner, I watched a couple more episodes of The Americans on Amazon Prime. I am realizing that I just do not enjoy television that much, but I want to see how the series ends, and I am almost to the end.

Tomorrow, I will start the day with an early 11 mile sunrise run. Sunrise runs are the best. I have a few work tasks and chores to get done, and then I am going to take Potatoe to a park and out to dinner for Mother’s Day. The boys are with their dad, so it is just me and the spudster. Potatoe LOVES to go places, and it has been a long time since I have taken him any where.

Here I am, already thinking about tomorrow, and forgetting to take time to appreciate today. There is a long list of things that made today a good day. One is that I spent very little time on Facebook. I like that Facebook keeps me connected with so many people that I do not get to spend as much time with as I would like, but Facebook right now is just post after post of everyone’s redundant opinions on Covid19, stay at home orders and face masks. I don’t know what the answer is to all of this, but I know that it is not on Facebook.

Another thing that made today a good day is that I started the day finding that Brainy Bird had gotten up on his own to study this morning, and I enjoyed a six mile run while he was studying. My six mile run, was just one part of my super productive, relaxing day.

More good things about today –

  • I enjoyed time this morning on my back porch.
  • The weather was amazing.
  • Potatoe, Storme and Tropper were all snuggled up together under my desk while I was working.

My favorite thing about today is that our popcorn pot arrived from Amazon. I have been in great anticipation of the arrival of this pot. The pot was supposed to have arrived earlier this week, but pretty much every Amazon shipment is delayed these days.

This all started in early April, when Little Chirp got a popcorn themed gift basket from one of our friends. We loved the microwave popcorn. Microwave popcorn is processed in such a way that it is often on lists of foods that one should NEVER eat. I decided to buy a bag of popcorn kernels and popcorn salt. Every recipe that I found for making perfect popcorn stressed the need for a large kettle like pot with an adjustable lid. We did not have anything like this, so we went on Amazon and purchased one.

The bag of popcorn kernels has been sitting on the counter for awhile now, and we are all looking forward to making our own popcorn. I am looking forward to sharing with the boys all of my dad’s attempts to make popcorn at home, much to my mom’s dismay. My dad LOVED popcorn; hated microwave popcorn. Hopefully, our first couple runs at popcorn making are not as much of a disaster as Dad’s were. I can still remember that odd smell of burned popcorn and butter lingering in the house for days.

Needless to say, I am looking forward to movie night with popcorn this week.

It is the little things in life.
