Rethinking the New Normal – Day 69 of 15

It is the last Sunday of May 2020. I am again sitting in my new favorite room of the house. Both the boys are showering after a long morning of finally unpacking the last of the boxes. We moved in September, so we have definitely taken our time in getting everything done. The boys made me happy today with extremely positive attitudes towards finally getting this all done. Brainy Bird liked going through all of the boxes of stuff, and Little Chirp likes cleaning. They make a good team.

Our big plan for tonight is to tune into NASCAR. We do not normally watch NASCAR, actually we even debated early this morning over which direction the cars drive. I believe that it is clockwise; Brainy Bird believes that it is counter-clockwise. We will see.

Our new found interest in NASCAR is that it is among the first of the major sports to return. To my knowledge, golf is the only other one that has started back up again. For me, the biggest will be the start of the NFL football season in the early fall. We have not actually missed any of the football season because of the timing of the shutdown, and I do miss baseball and basketball, but football is my favorite.

Dinner tonight will be fine dining on what is left of the freezer food that I purchased at the start of the shutdown. We have done an incredible job of using every bit of the groceries that we purchased with almost no waste. The bit of waste that we have had has been vegetables that did not last as they should have, and the few times we have cooked something that we ate that day, but no one liked it enough to eat the leftovers.

I find it far to easy to live in our little bubble in our little house on our little half acre. We are comfortably isolated from everything that is going on in the world. Virtually everyday, there is a headline news story involving domestic violence, child abuse or murder-suicide. My heartbreaks for the children trapped in abusive homes. The mental health ramifications of the shutdown are happening even faster than I thought that they would. A large number of my friends are out of work, and several have lost their businesses.

The road to recovery is going to be long.

It may seem trivial, but I believe that the return of professional sports is a major step in the recovery. I know how much I look forward to watching a game, and how much I enjoy going to my favorite bar to watch with my friends. I also know how much my boys enjoy watching games together as a family. I think this will be a healthy distraction.

I need to go brush up on my knowledge of NASCAR before the raise tips off at 5 o’clock this evening.

Thank you for stopping by to read my thoughts.
