It is June 1, 2020. I have been working for a couple of hours, making it time for my morning coffee break. The boys got home last night, and they are both still sleeping. Potatoe is asleep under my desk where he kicked Trooper out just a bit ago. My guess is that Trooper is back in his favorite basket. Pumpkine and Storme are running outside. The rain has made for a cooler than usual morning.
Today, the boys will be planning the meals for the week and doing the grocery shopping. I cannot wait to find out what we will be eating this week. This afternoon I am going to have them build a timeline of the evolution of journalism. We have gone from the 1960’s and 70’s when Walter Cronkite anchored the CBS news and was viewed as “the most trusted man in America”, with his sign off of, “And that’s the way it is” to today when there is more fiction and opinion in the news than facts. I want them to understand how this has evolved. I want them to understand that all of the major networks have a ratings agenda.
Once they have their assigned tasks done for the day, they will be free to spend the rest of the day as they choose. My guess is that Little Chirp will spend awhile out at his basketball court because it is cooler today, and then he will spend the rest of the day playing video games with Brainy Bird until it is time to make dinner. I hope to finish with work to get in a game of Mario Party with them this evening.
I will be busy working from home today. Working from home has become normal for me. I am super organized and productive. I never fully appreciated how many hours we burn up in a day on non-productive tasks, namely commuting back and forth to work. I do plan on going to the office one day this week just to see folks, but I have not decided what day that will be.
Today feels ordinary. To some degree this feeling is because my perspective of ordinary has changed. Namely, working from home has come to feel normal. On the other hand, today feels ordinary because my weekend was largely ordinary. On Saturday, my friend Kat and I ventured out to a friend’s new bar. I saw a lot of people I know there, and it was great to catch up with everyone. Last night, Yvonne, Page, Scott, Marisa and I went to dinner at a local steakhouse. Our meal was delicious. While dining on fine food that I did not have to cook myself is always a treat, the time with my friends is what made the weekend amazing.
It is the little things in life.
