The Break in the Clouds – Day 22 of 30

Brainy Bird just popped over to talk about his letters of recommendation for college. Deep breath, he is 45 days away from submitting his applications. His top 4 choices (in random order) are MIT, Penn, RIT and Indiana. All four colleges have remarkable computer science programs, and atmospheres that he believes he will thrive in. He also wants to go out of state and break the family tradition of attending A&M. Sigh, the little birdie has left the nest.

The other colleges on his list include: UC-San Diego, Florida, Georgia Tech, Duke, UVA, A&M, Texas and the University of Houston. If I could choose for him, I would choose A&M or Georgia Tech, but that is not how this process works. I sit on the sidelines, and I wait for updates from him on the process of narrowing down his list. I had planned to take him to visit both A&M and Georgia Tech this summer, and I regret not doing that sooner as they are now closed because of the virus.

I am truly impressed with the amount of thought that Brainy Bird has put into his list of schools. The next six months will be a roller coaster of rejections and acceptance, and choices. He will definitely have choices on where to attend. I think that all of the schools on his list are excellent options, and I have no doubt that he will make the right decision. I am excited for him.

I am not sure if we do so intentionally, but we always sync up early in the morning to talk about his college plans, while Little Chirp is still sleeping. Little Chirp understands that Brainy Bird is going off to college, and he takes interest and is supportive in big brother’s college search, but it brings him down to think about Brainy Bird going away next year.

Speaking of Little Chirp, he is supposed to be taking a shower right now, but I do not hear the shower water running. My guess is that he went back to sleep. He wanted to get up this morning to go with Brainy Bird to take my car to get the oil changed. We spend so little time away from the house that any where Little Chirp can go with Brainy Bird, he wants to go. They also have free cookies and hot chocolate at the car service place, which is an added bonus.

I have a long work day as I have 3 major things to get out the door before I call my workday done. Brainy Bird plans to spend the afternoon with one of his friends, and Little Chirp has plans to read, play video games and snuggle with Storme, a summer day in the life of a 12 year old.

It is the little things in life…
