The Summer of Uncertainty – Day 29 of 50

It is the last Saturday in July of 2020.

I imagine that Brainy Bird is in closing circle at Slumber Falls right about now. After a week of unplugging, bonding and drawing closer to one another, God and God’s amazing creation, the campers and camp leaders form together in a circle to pray and say good by to one another until next year. It is always a tearful good bye. This is his last hour as a counselor in training (CIT) at Slumber Falls as he will be 18 by next summer, and he will be an actual counselor.

I suspect that Brainy Bird will hang out with his fellow CIT’s and camp leaders before he heads back to my sister’s house. I suspect he will want a late lunch at Adobe Verde, my sister’s restaurant. Then he will be on the road home. Finally! It will be a long day for me as I anxiously await his arrival. The drive is almost exactly three hours from the restaurant to our doorstep.

Tomorrow, another chapter in Brainy Bird’s life begins, he will be completing his first round of college applications. He has decided to break his applications into two rounds. The first round will be schools that do not require teacher recommendations and SAT scores above a 1500. The second round will be schools that do require more than a 1500 and teacher recommendations. He still has hope of retaking the SAT in late August. Looking the long list of activities and accomplishment, which he drafted before he left for his summer break in New Braunfels, he has a very solid application. I have told him not to stress over the SAT. He fell just 10 points short of that coveted 1500. As Dog Mom always says, if it is meant to be, it will be. Dog Mom’s family is Catholic, so she is pulling for Notre Dame. I am pulling for a budget friendly option, whatever that may be.

Little Chirp has yet to get out of bed. He is snuggled up with Trooper. The other three furs have all found their morning nap spots. Pumpkine is snuggled up by herself on my bed, while Potatoe is asleep next to my chair. Storme is sleeping on a chair next to a window in the front room of the house. He had been gazing out the window for a long time before he settled in for his nap.

I, myself, am on my second cup of coffee. There is a lot going on today. I have got client work to do this morning. I need to go over to Sunshine’s house to help her move, and get some plants from her for my backyard. Then Little Chirp and I are headed to Josh and Irma’s to hang out and watch some baseball. The Astro’s won their season opener yesterday, and they play again this afternoon. Somehow in the midst of all of that, I need to figure out how to get my flat tire changed. What are the odds of getting a flat tire when one drives less than 100 miles over the period of an entire month?

Then this evening, Brainy Bird will be home, and I am looking forward to hanging out in our little kitchen together as a family.

It is the simple things in life…
