Fall begins on Tuesday, and we are having a little taste of “Fall, the Houston Way” this morning. This means that there is a light breeze, and it is not 100 degrees outside.
I am at a coffee place, sipping green tea, waiting for my friends to join me for brunch. They are getting massages this morning. I need to watch my spending, so I decided to meet them half way through their girl’s day for brunch, skipping the massage. I have been looking forward to this brunch since we made the plans on Thursday.
The boys are at home knocking off a long list of chores. The remodeling of the apartment is far enough along that Brainy Bird is able to move back in, which is the main objective of their chores. The only major things that are left to do is the electrical for the appliances and then the installation of the cabinets and appliances. We also need to fix the leaking shower, which is becoming a source of frustration.
In the main house, we are painting the kitchen cabinets, replacing the countertops and replacing the flooring in all of the room except the two bedrooms and my bathroom. The painting is in progress right now, and the entire house is a wreck. Little Chirp was actually wanting to take one cleaning the main house in addition to all of his garage apartment chores. This made my morning, but is efforts would be futile as long as the remodeling work is going on.
The three of us are all ready to be back in the house cooking our dinners together. Eating out got old in just one week. Giving Little Chirp a budget to manage for their meals worked out really well. He still has $40 left for today. They are not going to fine dine on that, but they can definitely eat. Their lunch plan is chic-fil-a.
Life is going well right now on all fronts. The boys are both doing great in school, and they are both visibly happy to be back at school. Brainy Bird again talked at length about his English IV AP class. One knows that their son has a good teacher when they are capturing their interest in a subject that they normally dread. Yesterday’s discussion was on Calvin and Hobbes, and the characterization of Hobbes. How could Hobbes be anything other than a flat character? He is a stuffed animal, or is he? Recalling the conversation makes me smile. Seeing Brainy Bird smile while he is talking about it, makes me really happy.
Little Chirp has a real shot at making the basketball team if he keeps up the level of practice that he is doing right now. I went out to feed the cats early this morning, and I heard the sound of the basketball pounding in the driveway. I did not even realize that he was out of bed. Little Chirp’s favorite class is his typing class. I am sure that there is something more interesting going on at school, but he is not going to admit it.
The fur kids are not liking the remodeling. I find it heart warming that they spend most of the day outside, and the four of them stay in a little pack together. At times they will chase each other around the yard, but a good portion of the day they are snuggled up together in and underneath the swing that hangs in the middle of the yard.
My friends have arrived for brunch, so I need to sign off for now.
It is the simple things in life…
