Last night Little Chirp went to his dad’s house, and Brainy Bird stayed with me to work on his college and scholarship applications. Brainy Bird and I were looking forward to making the last piece of salmon that was in the fridge for dinner. Little Chirp frowned upon this idea.
Brainy Bird marinated the salmon while I made a salad and salad dressing. I doubt that I will ever buy salad dressing from a grocery store ever again. The dressing we make ourselves is delicious, and we then know exactly what is in it. Brainy Bird put the salmon in the fridge for 30 minutes, and then he made the same yogurt dill sauce that his brother had made for us on Monday.
We had a delicious and healthy dinner in the making. We then heated the oven on broil, and we put the pan into the oven to heat up. The recipe specifically said not to use a pan with rubber handles, to be sure that it is oven safe. Instead of using one my frying pans, I chose to use a glass pan. See where this is going?
We removed the heated pan from the oven, and I am glad I chose to be the one to put the salmon into the pan. When the refrigerated marinade dripped into the blazing hot pan, it shattered in a dramatic fashion. Brainy Bird retrieve the salmon, and put it on a foiled lined cookie sheet to bake in the oven. While we waited for the salmon to finish baking, I found a shard of glass several feet from where the dramatic shattering of the glass pan had occurred. Was I really sure that the salmon, which was in the glass pan when it shattered, did not have a glass shard in it? Ugh!
Brainy Bird took the salmon out of the oven; it looked amazing, but I was worried. Honestly, I would have eaten myself, but I was afraid to let Brainy Bird eat it. He has an incredible life in store, why do anything to jeopardize that? We wound up throwing the suspicious salmon away, and Brainy Bird ran to our favorite locally owned Mexican restaurant to pick us up some dinner.
I know full well that hot glass will shattered if it is suddenly exposed to something cold; I am not sure how I managed to do something so stupid. For Christmas, I would like a pan made specifically for broiling that is made in America and BPA free. I should probably just go find that on Amazon right now.
The pan was shattered, but the evening was not. While we were cooking and then eating the dinner that we did not cook, Brainy Bird told me all about the book that he is reading in his senior English class, The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver. He really likes the book. He likes the style of writing where each chapter is narrated by a different character, thus sharing the many perspectives of the characters in the book. I am impressed by his analysis of the book.
The thing about Brainy Bird is that he has a super power, which is his aptitude for technology, which translates into incredible programming skills, but he has so many interests. He loves learning.
I am hands off in his college search. Working on his applications and scholarships for me means keeping him company in the home office, and answering questions regarding my finances for the FAFSA and scholarships. I work on stuff for work, and he works on his applications. I pray that he finds an option that lets him major in computer science, but allows him to explore subjects outside of technology as I believe that this is how he will find his purpose.
My heart is full of love and hope knowing that he could truly change the world.
