Happy Friday! A happy Friday it is. My alarm woke me from a deep sleep this morning. In contrast to normal mornings when I lay awake waiting for the sound of the music that my alarm is set to. As usual, I called the boys through Alexa to wake them without getting out of bed. I then considered not getting up myself. Brainy Bird can take Little Chirp to school; I just enjoy taking him, and we like to stop for donuts and coffee on Fridays.

The light from Little Chirp’s room flooded the hallway, and peeked under my bedroom door. In short time, I heard the rattling of pots in the kitchen. He ran out of his homemade soup for their lunches on Wednesday. I could hear the sounds of soup cans opening. Little Chirp does not like sandwiches, and most sandwiches are not healthy, so they take soup for lunch instead. Even on hot muggy days like today.

I did in fact get up out of bed. I gave Potatoe his usual morning snuggle. Potatoe won’t get out of bed to go outside until I give him a good snuggle. This morning, I snuggled him, and then said, “Outside.” Outside is his usual cue to hop from the bed and head outside. He just sat on the bed looking at me as if asking for more snuggles. I obliged, and then he headed out for his morning business.

I wished Little Chirp a happy Friday, and I asked if we would be going for donuts. Of course, his answer was yes. I fed the kitties while he finished making the lunches. Every morning, the kitties act as if they are famished from not eating for days, when they in fact filled their little tummies the night before. They wait by at the window of the door, staring in at us, until we open the door and they come rushing in for their breakfast. This morning, Storme hopped up on the sofa table to be petted as he usual does. The kitties all know they are allowed up on this table as no human food ever gets set on to it. Contrary to popular belief, kitties are just as trainable as dogs; they like routine.

A tired Brainy Bird joined in the kitchen just long enough to say good morning, feed Potatoe and grabbed the lunch that his little brother made for him. Brainy Bird and I were both up later than usual last night watching the debate and having a debate ourselves.

Little Chirp and I headed out the door together. We debated the merits of being loyal to our usual mom and pop donut shop or trying one of the two other mom and pop donut shops that we pass on our way to school. Yes! There are three locally owned donut shops in the 2 mile drive to school. There is also a Dunkin’ Donuts, but we only patronize local establishments.

Little Chirp made the call to stick with our local shop. Funny, he always goes in by himself, while I wait in the car. This morning he forgot my coffee. He placed his usual, 2 glazed and a blueberry order, and the woman asked, “Would you also like a large black coffee with that?” Good to know she was looking out for me and my coffee! Little Chirp relayed this experience to me on the remainder of the drive to school.

Our other topic of conversation on our drive was his grades. Little Chirp’s grades are outstanding! He is in all advanced classes, including high school algebra, and he is crushing it. He will for sure bring home an A in every class but English language arts (ELA). In ELA, he has a 90% with two major grades that the teacher has not posted yet. ELA is always Little Chirp’s lowest grade. He tends to teeter on a 90, while having A-pluses in all of his other classes. One of the ungraded major grades is a personal narrative that he believes he got an A on. The other is a “one pager”, which consists of a writing assignment on a large poster board. He says his content is great, but compared to the other “one pagers” posted on the teacher’s wall, his artwork on his “one pager” is a bit embarrassing. Still he made the wall thanks to his content. My thinking is that this is English class not art class, and he should get an A. We will see. These two grades will cement his A or pull him down to a B.

I got home with about half of my large coffee left. The big fur kids (Potatoe and Storme) are laying next to me in the home office as they usually do during the workday. Pumpkine is fast asleep on the fuzzy blanket that is folded on the end of my bed. She loves that blanket. Trooper is asleep in his basket by the fireplace. By mid-morning, the kittens will likely have joined the big furs in laying next to me.

It is a typical day in our little house. It is a happy day. It is the little things in life.
