Potatoe and I are sitting on the back porch, enjoying a beautiful evening. The air is crisp and clean. There is a slight breeze, and the red glow of a picturesque sunset fills the canopy of the trees off to the left side of the backyard.
Brainy Bird is inside recording his interview for his scholarship application to one of his top choice schools. He has been practicing all day. This is his first time to ever do a recorded, online interview. The process is a bit nerve racking in that you start the recording, and then there is no turning back. It is just him and the computer, which generates the interview questions. There is no one on the other side of the interview. This is tricky in that there is no human element of nonverbal feedback or interaction.
An airplane is filling the air with the noise of it passing over the house. I wonder if Brainy Bird can hear this inside. The airplane finally passed over. A second airplane is now flying over, seriously?
There are just five more days remaining in 2020. I find myself wondering what next year will bring. One of the biggest things that is beginning to weigh on me is whether or not the universities will have returned to normal by the time Brainy Bird starts college next fall. Obviously, I desperately hope so. The state of things varies wildly from one part of the United States to another.
A third plane is now flying over.
Now, a fourth plane is flying over, and this has the neighbors’ dogs across the street barking. The dogs are barking in the direction of the big front window of the house where Brainy Bird is recording his interview. Sigh! Brainy Bird put a great deal of thought into making sure he had a quiet, well lit place for his interview. I am not sure who decided to redirect half the plane landing at Bush airport to fly over our residence.
I know that he will take this in stride. There is a light in his eye, and an eager, excited smile on his face when he talks about his plans to find his own way through college and to go out of state. This will undoubtedly shine through during his interview.
I have now lost track of the number of airplanes that have flown over the house. The noise is almost constant at this point. I have never before heard a plane fly over the house. Doh! At least the dogs have finally stopped barking.
Brainy Bird just joined me on the back porch. He is all smiles. He feels good about his interview. He says he was shaky on the first few questions because he was nervous, but that he got his rhythm, and feels that he did a good job. The months ahead are going to be eventful!
