The safety of the COVID vaccine seems to be the top national news story today. There is also a warning that we could see another surge in the virus as states are reopening and some, including Texas, are ending the mask mandate. The news almost feels like the media is worried that we are no longer scared, so they may be losing their control over us.

On a local news front, the Houston Texan’s star quarterback, Deshaun Watson, is under investigation by the NFL. There have been three civil lawsuits filed against him, alleging the quarterback inappropriately touched women during massages. There is so much more news about NFL players off the field than there is about players on the field.

On a positive local news front, the Houston Cougars are a second seed team in the March Madness tournament. The games begin on Friday. I picked the Cougars to win it all in my company bracket pool. The entire city of Houston rallies around the Cougs. It is one of many things that I love about the city that I live in.

The boys are at Little Chirp’s basketball practice. My guess is that Little Chirp is lagging in practice this evening. He spent nearly the entire day outside playing on his basketball court. The weather was beautiful. He is surely tired by now.

Today has been the biggest of Brainy Bird’s college search thus far. He found out Monday that he is nominated for the top scholarship that the top university of his choice has to offer. He interviewed for the scholarship this morning. He is an excellent fit for the program. He is more than a little excited. His allergies are killing him, but he is still visibly very excited about the opportunity.

He also received a huge scholarship to another university, and notification of direct acceptance into an accelerated BS/MS program at a university that is in his top five choices. He has so many exciting options. All of his interviewing and scholarship applications are done as of today. Now, it is just a matter of waiting for all of the outcomes.

Potatoe is visibly lonely after having five full days with his cousins, Bentley and Tucker to run around with. He is trying to get the cats to play with him, but he is not having much luck. Storme did snuggle with him for part of the afternoon. Trooper and Pumpkine have been outside all day enjoying the beautiful weather.

I am in charge of making dinner tonight, so I better get the fur kids fed and dinner started. I am making okra stew for myself, and hamburgers for the boys. I am taking my health seriously. It is easy to eat healthy when fresh vegetables are involved. After dinner, the boys and I will play a few games before calling it a night.

A year later, our state is back open. I am grateful to see life returning to the way it was before COVID robbed us of our freedoms and our daily lives. It is the little things in life, like happy hour with friends, hugs and handshakes that I have missed the most.
