The calendar is riddled with Brainy Bird’s end of high school activities. He has completed four of his five AP exams, and prom was over the weekend. Today, he takes his last AP exam. For many, AP exams inflict a tremendous amount of stress. I am one of these people. For Brainy Bird, the AP exams provide a break from the usual classroom time and homework routine. I for one am happy that today is the last of the major exams.

Tomorrow, we go together to a tea in the evening. The students in the top 10% of the class get invited to the tea, and they get to bring one guest. I am the lucky guest. My excitement over attending this event far exceeds Brainy Bird’s. I think that once we get there, that he will find that it is fun. It is a last opportunity to spend time with his friends.

Before we head off to tea, the most exciting event of the week happens. Brainy Bird meets with his University of South Carolina academic advisor. He spent the weekend preparing. He reviewed the Computer Science and Math degree programs along with the requirements for the honors college. He mapped out his eight semesters of coursework, and he made a list of questions for the advisor. Once his meeting is complete, he will be able to register for classes. This might make us late to the tea, but we will get there when we get there.

While Brainy Bird and I are at the tea, Little Chirp has big plans for his night alone. He will be having Freebirds delivered to him. He confirmed that he can include a brownie in his order. He keeps asking when the big night of being home alone will be.

On Wednesday morning, we have Brainy Bird’s senior award ceremony. I am hoping that we will get to attend in person, but realistically with the weather forecast as it stands now the event will be moved indoors to the gym. Because of Covid, we will not be able to attend in person if they move the event indoors, so we will watch virtually. I won’t lie, I am REALLY looking forward to the award ceremony. They will announce his big scholarship, and I am extremely proud of him.

After this week, the boys have just four days of school left. The last day of school is next Thursday, and then graduation is on Saturday. We are keeping the graduation celebration simple with dinner at our favorite locally owned restaurant. The excitement will continue into June as we head to South Carolina for orientation the first Sunday of the month. We will be there for just a couple of days, but it will be exciting to be on campus.

It is no doubt an exciting time for Brainy Bird. My heart is filled joy thinking of all that lies ahead.
