Little Chirp arrived home this afternoon just in time to join me for grocery shopping. Earlier in the day, I sent him a text with a list of meal plans for the week, and I asked him to veto two of them. I planned to make the two meals that he vetoed for myself on Wednesday and Thursday when he goes to his dad’s house. To my surprise, he vetoed two meals that I put on the menu thinking he liked them (chicken pot pies and spaghetti and meatballs) , and Brainy Bird does not.
I in turn adjusted the two meals that I will be making for myself to be two of my own favorites. We enjoyed grocery shopping together. While at the grocery store, Little Chirp asked when we could go to the gym again. I told him that we could go as soon as we finished grocery shopping and unpacking the groceries.
While we unpacked the groceries, Little Chirp reminded me of how he got his blog name. To this day, he remains the most inquisitive human that I have ever met. On the way to the gym, we discussed how car insurance works, and the concepts of liability verses full coverage. I have no idea how this came up.
When we got to the gym, Little Chirp threw me for a loop by telling me that he planned to lift weights with me. Our usual gym routine consists of him playing pick up games of basketball, and me heading upstairs to lift weights. In truth, I just sort of mill around. I do use a few of the weight machines, but I mostly just watch him from the second story window of the gym that looks over the basketball courts.
“Weights! Yes, let’s hit the weights,” I said as if I had a clue what I was doing.
An hour later, I could barely walk. Little Chirp needs to work on his physical strength, and he obviously knows this as he is asking to lift weights with me. I am in the same boat, but I am 30 years older than him, so the sudden hour plus weight work out has me zonked. I could not believe the extent to which he just kept going.
On the way home from the gym, Little Chirp asked if we could make healthy smoothies for our post-workout treats. We in turn made a second trip to the grocery store. This time, we purchased protein powder, frozen bananas, almond milk, Greek yogurt, and ginger. We already have frozen blueberries, strawberries, and pomegranate. Little Chirp goes to a 2 hour conditioning camp at his school tomorrow morning for off season. I look forward to smoothie making when he gets home.
For dinner, we stuck with our healthy choices, and we made Thai basil chicken. The Thai chilis were the hottest that we have ever had, but the dish still turned out amazingly well. We topped the night off with two episodes of Lupin on Netflix. Needless to say, we enjoyed a great and healthy afternoon together.
We will spend our next couple of trips to the gym in the same mode that we did today, in that we will explore the weight room and the different machines. Then we will create a workout plan for him. At this rate, I will be in shape by the end of the summer, and Little Chirp will have gained the strength that he is looking for to be successful at basketball in the fall. In the meantime, I will be sleeping like a baby.
Good night!
