I am in my running clothes, but I have not gone for my Saturday morning run yet. I am waiting to hear back from Brainy Bird’s dad on whether or not he is picking Brainy Bird up from the airport. The poor bird is only about 12 hours later than expected.
So far, “adulting” has been the best days of Brainy Bird’s life. The past 24 hours, not so much. After an amazing three days at his leadership camp in South Carolina, Brainy Bird texted me Friday afternoon that his flight was slightly delayed. Initially, this worked out well as he got to stay until the very end of camp Friday afternoon.
When I talked to him while he was waiting at the airport, he told me that he really enjoyed the camp. In all of the pictures online, he looks engaged in the activities and is indeed enjoying it. He also told me that his flight was further delayed, but he was going to enjoy his dinner and get some programming done. The food is not half bad at the Columbia airport. The staff at the restaurant are super nice.
The next text message from Brainy Bird…more delays. He decided the best approach was to press ahead and get home to his bed as soon as possible. He can now check “spending the night at an airport” off his life to do list. As getting home as soon as possible would mean spending the night at the airport in Dallas. By the time he got to Dallas there would not be enough time to get to a hotel, sleep, and get back to the hotel. Yvonne and I set up a group text in case he needed something. I am not a night person.
Brainy Bird landed in Dallas around 1 AM this morning, and then he spent what had to have been an uncomfortable six hours at the airport. He is now on a plane to Houston. As many times in my life as I have traveled, I have never spent the night at an airport. The airlines are the least efficient that they have ever been. Brainy Bird and I are both hoping that United puts their direct flight from Houston to Columbia, South Carolina back on the calendar soon.
Brainy Bird took this all in stride. I can tell it is not discouraging him from his new life in South Carolina. In just three short weeks, my little bird will be off to college.
