It is around 8 PM on the last Friday of July 2021. I am already in my PJ’s laying in bed with a large bottle of ice cold water. I got out of the shower a bit ago to find the boys were no longer in the living room of our little hotel suite. They were either abducted by aliens or went for ice cream. It has been almost an hour since Little Chirp ate something, so he must be famished.

We started our day early, and did two different tours. The first tour took us through the DC monuments. The second tour was a food tour through Georgetown. The second tour was four hours long. I loved it, but there was much more walking and learning about Georgetown than eating.

The tour of the DC monuments reminded me of a simpler time. I saw the FDR and MLK, Jr. monuments for the first time. I feel that both monuments are beautifully done, and they honor two of the greatest men in our countries history. Where are the great country men today?

I am not big on taking pictures, so we did not take a lot of pictures, but we did take a picture of the boys with FDR’s dog. This is the only monument in DC with a dog. If I had a monument, it would also need a statue for my precious Potatoe.

We finished our first tour about two hours before the second one began, and it was lunch time, so we grabbed some tapas, and I enjoyed a glass of wine. Brainy Bird shared with his little brother the things that he is glad he did in high school, and things that he wish he had done. This was a great conversation.

There is little that Brainy Bird regrets doing or would do differently. Interestingly, he said he thought that he would maybe have joined a club sport, like frisbee golf. He said he would probably go to homecoming every year, but that everyone should go at least once.

He said to take as many AP courses as humanly possible. He only had two AP courses, which did not translate into at least three hours of college credit, and he would have taken both anyway. In total, he has 64 hours of applicable college courses. I am happy to say that Little Chirp is gearing up to do the same when he starts high school in a year.

The boys just returned to the hotel. Either the aliens returned them, or they finished enjoying their ice cream. Our next family conversation will be on our hiking plans tomorrow. My favorite family vacation tradition is the family hike. There are countless places to hike in the DC area. I am off to bed to get a good night of sleep in anticipation of the big hike tomorrow.
