It is Sunday morning, the first day of August and the last day of our summer vacation, a vacation that we almost did not take because I was worried about spending the money. I decided in favor of going on the trip because it is Brainy Bird’s last summer before he gets busy with internships, study abroad, and trips with friends in college. Needless to say, I am beyond happy that we took the trip. We made so many great memories. The whole trip was underbudget, and then I had my big exciting win at the casino last night.
Today is what we call our sloth day. No offense to sloths. We like pretending to be sloths every now and again. When we go on vacation, we always pack a crazy amount of activities into a single day, and we like to get up early to beat the crowds. Over the years, we have learned that we need a vacation day where we do not have to wake up early and we have nothing planned. We call it our sloth day. This comes from the original sloth day, when Little Chirp was around seven, and he had been pretending to be a bear for about a week on vacation. He needed a break one day, and he declared himself a sloth. We skipped touring Philadelphia that day, and hung out at the hotel.
This year, sloth day happens to be the last day of our vacation.
The boys are “slothing” back at the hotel. I imagine they will sleep until eleven AM when they finally have to get up so we can check out and get to the airport on time. I got up excitedly and I am enjoying breakfast and coffee at a locally owned restaurant. Note to self – Do not order shrimp and grits in Maryland. No idea how I went for shrimp and grits, instead of crab cakes in Maryland. Nonetheless, I am enjoying my time to write and reflect on the week.
Everyday this week, something special has happened, and the boys and I have had a great time together making new vacation memories. In just twelve days, Brainy Bird and I will start our road trip to Columbia, South Carolina, where I will drop him off for his first year of college. This has been an amazing summer, and the best is yet to come.
