If my memory is correct, the shutdown in Harris County began 730 days ago. No worries, the shutdown was only for 15 days, and the end result would be that lives would be saved, and we could then go about our ordinary lives. Life as we knew it ended. Government officials, which almost none of us voted for, began making laws to put restrictions on our freedom. Our fellow citizens felt empowered to rant on Facebook about how we should live our lives. In the midst of it all, our country elected a senile president.
The death toll of Covid is approaching one million people in the US, and it exceeds 6 million worldwide. The four states most notorious for being far right or far left lead the nation in the number of deaths. They are also the most populous states, suggesting that the politics and wild variation in rules and restrictions across the nation did nothing to curb the virus. The virus was unstoppable.
Now, our economy deals with the aftermath of extraordinary government expenditure to support people sitting at home during the shutdown. Gas prices are at record highs, and inflation is out of control with no end in sight. Many fear that our economy will enter into a recession before the year’s end. Our government managed to tear down the strong economy that our nation has ever seen.
Meanwhile, with America asleep at the wheel, Russia has invaded Ukraine. Russia a world power with nuclear weapons has gone to war without fear of Americans. Our country is divided to the point that we are no longer the most powerful nation in the world.
This time last year, I often wondered where we would be in a year. Now, I wonder the same. Will the mid-term elections in November be enough to bring dramatic change? Is it possible for the politicians in Washington to come together for the greater good of our country?
Our ancestors fought for the freedom that our government gladly took away during the pandemic. Our government cares about their own pocketbooks, mansions, and being re-elected to maintain their power. Our nation’s leader, especially our president, view us citizens and stupid sheep that need to be herded and told what to do.
The freedom of our world is at stake. Wake up America.
