It is Sunday before the Fourth of July in 2022. Little Chirp and I returned a bit ago after a hot, thirty-minute walk with the dogs. Yes, that is dogs plural. Just over a week ago, I learned about a dog that the owners were wanting to rehome. The owners found that the dog has too much energy for their small yard, and the dog really wanted to be around other animals. They are gone a lot, so they did not want to take on another animal, and they wanted to make their pooch happy.

While they live in a much nicer house than we do, our house is way better suited for the pooch. We live on over a half-acre of land, and of course, we have a dog and three cats that all love other animals. An added bonus is that another dog of the same breed as our new pooch lives on the neighboring ten acres of land. This past Tuesday, this sweet doggie, a medium-sized labradoodle came to live with us. Let the play dates begin!

We decided to name him Murphey. Murphy is an Irish nickname for a potato, and Murphey was born on St. Patrick’s Day in 2021. Of course, we added an “e” to the name as the tradition holds. Murphey is making friends with all of the furs, especially Winter. It is beyond adorable to watch the smallest of the fur kids bond with the largest of the fur kids. To put it in perspective, Murphey is at least four times larger than Potatoe, who is more than three times larger than Winter.

All of the furs were scared by the little bit of fireworks that we had last night. I woke up around midnight to find Chewey and Winter snuggled up next to Murphey, and Potatoe hanging over the edge of the bed towards them. I knew that the animals would find a way to all live in harmony. I had no idea they would bond to such a degree and how quickly this would happen.

Murphey, who has already taken on the nickname “The Murph”, is presently napping under my desk after our walk. Potatoe is sleeping to the side of him, while Chewey and Winter are napping on top of the desk. I am so grateful that we got to add Murphey to the fur herd. He is adjusting well, and I think the other furs are grateful for him too.

Welcome home Big Murph!
