All week long, all that I thought about was watching college football with my love on Saturday, and watching the first full day of NFL football with him on Sunday from noon until bedtime. I worked later than I needed to in order to not need to work this weekend. While there is a pet project that I am tempted to work on, I did in fact achieve my goal of finishing all of my work. I am free to watch football all weekend long!!!

Now, the weekend is here, and I do intend to watch some football, but my thoughts are elsewhere. Our family friend, the man that my nephew calls grandpa, is in the hospital here in Houston, and the news is not good. I want for him to heal. I want for him to not be in pain. I also want him to have more time on Earth with his grandson. Little Chirp and I may drive down to the hospital tomorrow instead of parking ourselves in front of the television.

Another aspect of life more important than football is that Little Chirp needs a great deal more time behind the wheel before he gets his license in March. He asked yesterday at dinner if we could do like I did when Brainy Bird had his learner’s permit. We would drive to a faraway location in Houston; eat a nice breakfast or lunch, and then drive back all while Little Chirp stayed home and slept late. I loved these days with Brainy Bird. I have been so busy with work every weekend this year, that I have not had this time with Little Chirp. Another great reason to go down to the hospital and see our friends.

I also need to lay off the beer, junk food, and get some serious exercise, which tends to not be what happens when I sit and watch football all day. So many people in this world experience health problems beyond their control. Then there are people like myself that need to start making better choices. I am not waiting until the New Year to lose weight and get back into shape. This weekend’s long run will only be four miles, but I will run them all. I started a training plan to get into shape to run a sub-two hour half marathon on January 1st. I want to start 2024 in shape instead of setting a New Year’s resolution to get into shape. I did okay this first week, but I have a long way to go.

My favorite time of year is upon us. The season for fall, football, food, family, and friends. Family and friends are what really matter to me as my treasured time of year begins.
