Today was a beautiful day.  The weather was in fact amazing, beautiful blue skies, seventy degrees and a light whisper of a cool breeze.  Perhaps, it is the weather that set the tone for the day, but it was the day itself that I found to be beautiful.  The day started with waking from an uninterrupted night of sleep, no bad dreams.  I hopped into the shower and enjoyed the morning show on the radio.  The folks on the morning show made me smile with a story about a boy who gave flowers to every girl in school for Valentine’s Day.   I am not a girl that wants flowers on Valentine’s Day, and I don’t really understand such a desire, but I am charmed by the boy’s willingness to put himself out there in order to make so many girls that do want flowers on Valentine’s Day happy.

I got out of the shower and dressed to find that we were running late.  I rushed out of the bathroom to wake up Brainy Bird only to find him and Little Chirp sitting on a bar height bench that pulls up to the bar along the edge of the kitchen.  The boys were both dressed, and the lunches were packed with thermoses full of soup, gold fish crackers, apple sauce and a drink.  I was please to find their whole morning routine done without even a word from me.

I greeted each of them with a hug, and then I asked the obvious question, “What are you guys sitting here waiting for?”

“Breakfast!” Little Chirp said triumphantly, grinning ear-to-ear, which is a pretty big grin with the size of his noggin.  I think on some level he knew that they had demonstrated self-sufficiency by getting themselves up, dressed and making lunches, and Little Chirp wanted to see if he could get a rise out of me.  Instead, he got a smile and a kiss on the forehead.

“I got breakfast!”  Brainy Bird said with a laugh as he went to the freezer to get some waffles.  I finished getting ready, and we all headed off to school.

Once at work, I had a rare day where I got to focus on solving one interesting application problem most of the day.  I love programming, and I love problem solving.  We put together the solution, which we will test out tomorrow, and then I headed to the doctor’s office for some good news.  All of my blood work is fine, and there is no indication from any of my test results that I have cancer.  I get to wait two months before going back.  There haven’t been a lot of weeks that I haven’t been to the doctor in the past four months.  It is only Tuesday, and I have been twice this week.

After my doctor’s visit, I picked up Little Chirp from his after school care, and he made my day with, “Mommy, what is for dinner?”  I like it when he calls me mommy.  I responded by asking what he wanted there to be for dinner.

“Can we have that chili again tonight?”  He asked excitedly.  Yesterday, I had made a huge pot of chili.  Not my usual Tex-Mex chili.  This was made from grass fed ground beef, tomatoes and seven different vegetables.  I actually made it thinking the boys would pick over it for lunch that day, and then I would have something super healthy to take for lunch each day.   Instead, they both loved it.  They had it again for dinner last night.  Hearing them rave about something that I cooked for them that is so healthy made feel really good.  The fact that they both wanted to have it again tonight made my day.

We got home, and I went for a run.  I am still not back to the pace that I was at pre-surgery, but I am definitely headed in that direction.  I grabbed a shower after my run, while the boys finished up their homework, and then I honored Little Chirp’s request for leftover chili.

After their healthy dinner, the boys headed outside to play, and I worked on something for a new project at work.  They just got back a bit ago, and enjoyed their Valentine’s Day chocolates and headed upstairs for a shower.  The boys will be off to bed soon for a little reading before it is time for lights out.  I will enjoy some quiet time to write.  The ordinary days are often the most beautiful.
