Not worthwhile guy number two is Catfish. Unlike Weekend Dad, Catfish is a good father and an engaging conversationalist. Catfish has been all over the world, and he has lots of interesting ideas and adventures to share. My sense about Catfish is that he had long been a contractor working in the oil industry, and like many he was making some where way north of six figures, and like many he has been out of work for a while, and he is close to broke. The oil and gas industry has cut more than 30% of jobs, so a person has nearly a 1 in 3 chance of losing their job in the current economy. This is hard for many because while there are other jobs out there, these jobs are often filled by younger candidates and pay far less than most of us are used to making in the Houston economy.
Catfish told me that he owns 300 acres of land in Ireland, a condo in Houston, and a house in Tulsa. I can neither confirm nor deny the land in Ireland or house in Tulsa, but I can say with certainty that his condo is owned by the woman that he is currently living with. She is a teacher, and he was not paying any bills. I learned this when she saw a text message on his phone from me while he was sleeping. She called and asked me who I am. I was absolutely shocked to learn that he had a significant other. While Catfish may be down on his luck financially, he very much seemed to me like a loving, kind and honest man.
Ironically, I wasn’t dating Catfish for monetary reasons. Actually, I wanted to end things with him when he told me on the phone one morning that I needed to quit worrying about work because he pays more in taxes than I make in a year. My guess is that he was thinking about his girlfriend, the school teacher when he said this. I have no doubt that when employed he is paying more in taxes than a teacher is making. It is irrelevant to me how much money a man makes as long as he can afford his own self and children. I was dating him because I thought that he was a really good person; I guess that turned out to not be the case at all.
I feel terrible for the woman that he has been dating. She is dealing with the heartache of loving and trusting someone that is cheating on her and having to tell her friends and family that knew all about him what he has done. We both think that I am not the only other woman that Catfish was seeing. My guess is that Catfish was looking for a higher end lifestye than he would have with a school teacher, and she was just an interim solution until he is again employed and has better options….monetary options that is. I am thinking about introducing her to one of my employed oil and gas friends when she is ready to get back into the dating world. We have talked a lot on the phone the past couple of days, and exchanged a lot of Facebook messages. She is a super cool and intelligent chic, and she pretty in her Facebook pictures. I know plenty of men that would be thrilled to have a girl like her be theirs.
