I might need to change Little Chirp and Brainy Bird’s blog names to Big Chow Hound and Bigger Chow Hound.  I am not entirely sure who would get what nickname.  On the farm growing up, an animal that could not regulate its own food intake and would essentially eat however much you put in front of it was labeled a chow hound.  I think the reference of hound comes from the fact that most dogs are this way, and then the chow explains itself.  Every now and again, I hear someone refer to their house cat as a chow hound.  These days, the words, “chow hound” make me think of my Birds.

Of course, I am only joking about changing their names.  But, I am fascinated by how much food they eat!  Everyone has told me for so long that this would begin to happen, but it does not make it any less fascinating.  Both boys are perfectly fit, not an ounce of unneeded fat on their bodies.  Brainy Bird could definitely benefit from putting on some weight.  Little Chirp has a perfect physique with zero fat and muscles to go along with it.  They are both tall and blessed with great metabolisms, but the difference between the two is that Little Chirp eats more, and his idea of eating is meats and vegetables.  Brainy Bird has a smaller appetite, he will eat his meat and vegetables, but in smaller portions, and he is always holding out for candy.

The healthiest and most cost effective way of feeding my little chow hounds is by cooking at home.  On Sunday, I started a 10 day detox diet.  Basically, you eat nothing but meat and tons of veggies for 10 days and refrain from caffeine and alcohol.  I went to the store on Sunday, and I bought tons of meats and vegetables.

I can’t say that I was excited about my upcoming 10 days of deprivation.  Little Chirp arrived home from a weekend with his dad to change all of that.  I think most children head to the pantry after Mom goes to the grocery store to see if there are cookies or chips, and then walk away with dissapointment when they do not find any, not Little Chirp.

I was working from home, and Little Chirp popped in the door after his walk home from school.  He saw new tomatoes and avocados out on the countertop, and he turned to me and asked, “Mommy, did you go to the store without me?”

“Yes sweetie, I wanted to do this diet.”  I said as I slid the 10 Day Detox Diet Cookbook over to him.

“Mommy, this book has the vegetable chili in it.  Are we having vegetable chili??” He got excited.

Little Chirp did not wait for me to answer.  He zipped over to the refrigerator and pulled it open like a child marveling in a candy store, “Woah Mommy, there are so many vegetables.  Can I do all the cooking?”

Little Chirp then spent the next twenty minutes or so doing an inventory of all the vegetables and fresh meats.  He couldn’t wait to cook with a  leak for the first time, and to make his own salad dressing.  He asked lots of questions about the food nutrition.  I went from dread of the 10 Day Detox Diet, to being just as excited as Little Chirp.
