RSVP – That’s French for Don’t Be a Jackass

It is no secret that I love to plan social events.  Parties, happy hours, running groups, networking events, kid events, I love planning things.  Little Chirp has made the accusation more than once that I enjoy the planning more than the event.  There is some truth to that.  The whole truth is that I love both.

There is just one frustration to planning social outings, and that is trying to figure out how many people will be attending.  If the event is in a public place, I need to make a proper reservation.  If it is at my house, I need to plan from a food and beverage perspective.

I understand that sometimes people simply can’t get the energy up to go somewhere even though they said they were coming, and I understand that things come up unexpectedly.  However, people who RSVP maybe, so they can see what other social options they may have come up for the same day between now frustrate me.

One of my favorite social outings to plan is at my friend Laurie’s sports bar, Sportin’ Woody’s.  They have live music and steaks on Wednesday.  The music and steaks are always great, and it is a great crowd.  The bar does not serve steak except on Wednesday nights, so there is an art to having the right amount of steaks on hand.  I have had situations where I had a dozen maybe’s leading into steak night, and I never know what to tell Laurie.  The most epic, the friend who RSVP “maybe” less than an hour before steak night was to start.  She couldn’t forecast what she would be doing in the next 60 minutes?  Seriously!

When I win the lottery, I am going to plan an event, and only invite those who routinely RSVP.  I am going to take them all to Perry’s Steakhouse, buy them a ridiculously nice dinner, and then I am going to give them all $14,000.  This is the max amount of money you can gift someone with them having to pay taxes.  Then I am going to post it all over Facebook.  Seriously, this is going to happen one day.

RSVP – that is French for “don’t be a jackass”.

Shout out to Laurie for putting up with all of you non-RSVP’ers when I plan a social outing on her bar’s steak night!  Shout out to Laurie for being just plain amazing.
